By the glass at One Penny Red

One Penny Red is set in the beautifully renovated old Summer Hill post office, built in 1900. The room is airy and light making it the perfect stop for our Friday lunch.

It's rare to go to a restaurant with a team that brings years of quality industry experience to the table. One Penny Red offers just that with owners Nina Alidenes and David Murphy on the floor and RJ Lines on the pans.

David's wine list is so exciting, there are always so many options I am dying to try so I usually ask him to pour me something to ease my Libran indecision. Two of my recent fav new wine finds have come from One Penny Red.

How to make an Aperol spritz

With it being a cracker of a day we decided to start ourselves off with a spritz, made with our Val Piana prosecco. Warm weather cries out for a spritz.

- How to make an Aperol spritz -
Three parts prosecco
Two parts Aperol
One part soda water

Pour over ice with a slice of orange, too easy. We serve these at any party we have as it doesn't matter if the prosecco is cold or not when adding ice. Winner! I like to add a little more soda and a little less aperol to my own drink as aperol can be a little sweet for my palate, so play around until you get your ideal mix. We swap the Aperol for our Fred Jerbis bitters  which takes the spritz to a whole new level with it's 34 secret Italian botanicals...

Now to the food. We went for a grazing tapas style lunch. Albacore tuna tataki, smoked mussel, Coorong sea blight and sumac was AMAZING. Sardine on rye, delicious. Rj is one talented Chef, each mouthful offered a perfectly crafted bite of FLAVOUR.

We continued with prosecco in the form of a pink gin fizz which comes in by pitcher and also simply, by the glass. The Val Piana prosecco is a family run winery who are committed to sustainable farming practices and to creating quality prosecco as close to its local indigenous history as possible. **This is not the kind of prosecco you wake up from the next day with a chemical taste in your mouth and headache to penny red, prosecco

Salt cod fritters are a must at One Penny Red with a smoked chilli mayo. There is a reason they have been a mainstay on the menu since One Penny Red opened it's doors over three years ago.

We absolutely loved the butter lettuce salad with peas and mint and a chardonnay dressing. This is now my go to salad at home.

We had just enough room for a little taster of dessert, the banana and salted caramel beignet with choc sauce and cannolo which were both worth the calories.

You can find One Penny Red open for dinner from Monday - Saturday and lunch Wednesday - Sunday. They also have Vernon's bar upstairs adding cool to Summer Hill. Vernon's Bar has a gorgeous private room which is perfect for gathering a group of friends for a $75 four course sharing menu. Friends? Let's do this!

Special thanks to my talented lunch companion, Ann Ouchterlony, who casually took all these gorgeous photos on her iPhone. Aren’t they great?

A Chent'annos,
