BARDOLINO, VENETO
Villa Calicantus is a small winery in the heart of Bardolino Classico on the banks of Lake Garda. Chiara and Daniele Delaini work 8 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive trees and small woods. 2011 was their first vintage however Daniele’s Great Grandfather established the winery in 1860. After the death of Daniele’s Grandfather in the 70s the family took a hiatus from the wine world and left Villa Calicantus as a holiday home. This unknowingly saved the winery from the industrialisation that the appellation went through at this time turning Bardolino from an historic zone that produced soulful, light to medium bodied wines with the potential to age, to mass-produced innocuous quaffing wine. This paved the way for Daniele and Chiara to make the conversion from organic to biodynamic farming in 2014.
