Did you know that Sangiovese’s name derives from the Latin “Sanguis Jovis”, "the blood of Jove the ancient God of sky and thunder and king of all Gods?
Sangiovese is a variety produced for the most part in central Italy from Romagna down to Lazio and is the most widespread grape grown in Tuscany producing some of Italy's most famous wines. It is a high yielding, late ripening grape. It produces wines with pronounced tannins and acidity and its flavour can vary from leather earthy nuances to red cherries and plums.
Brunello di Montalcino is the most prestigious Sangiovese of them all. Made following strict DOCG regulations it is made with 100% Sangiovese Grosso. The Tuscan hilltop town of Montalcino is a mountaintop town up to 600mt above sea level with an incredible view of the Val d'Orcia. Vineyards are planted up to 500m.a.s.l to ensure the grapes can achieve full ripeness as above those temperatures are too low for ripening. The climate in Montalcino is one of the warmest and driest in Tuscany. Achieving full ripeness is consequently a rarely encountered problem for Brunello's vignerons. In good years the Sangiovese Grosso grapes ripen up to a week earlier than those in nearby Chianti and Montepulciano.
Traditional Brunello di Montalcino winemaking methods involve long aging in large vats, typically made from Slavonian oak. This results in particularly complex wines, although some consider this style too tannic and dry.
According to the disciplinare di produzione (the legal document laying out the wine's production laws) for Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello must be made from 100 percent Sangiovese and aged for at least four years (five for riserva wines). Two of these years must be spent in oak, and the wine must be bottled at least four months prior to commercial release.
These restrictions paired with premium land prices, small yields and demand for Brunello di Montalcino give the wine a high price tag. Not to mention the considerable work that is involved in producing this prestigious wine.
About the producer
La Rasina has been passed down three generations in the Mantengoli family. Current owner Marco has brought new ideas and state of the art technology into the cellar transforming their simple family farm into a world class winery. The vineyard is exclusively planted with Sangiovese grosso vines that range from 2-30 years, cultivated with low cordon pruning at a plant density of 3500-4000 per hectare. Marco aims to produce a more elegant, lighter-style Brunello with a rich creamy texture from its unique use of autolysis. La Rasina is certified organic vineyard.
